Standards are needed for the future of recycling. Since December 2021, the first such standard, DIN SPEC 91446, has been launched.
"Without standards, neither consumers nor companies can recognize what quality materials, products or even processes have. But only through recognizable good quality can trust be created in a market." - State Secretary Christiane Rohleder, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) (read the BMUV press release).
This also applies to recyclates. Quality is essential!
Not all recyclates are the same - And although recycling has been practiced for decades to recover valuable secondary raw materials, surprisingly there have been no guidelines for the classification and description of recycled plastic to date. However, these are needed to enable transparency and comparability of materials and to ensure quality.
DIN SPEC 91446 was initiated by Christian Schiller, CEO of Cirplus, an online marketplace for recyclates and plastic waste.
As a leading company in the mechanical recycling of thermoplastics and manufacturer of premium recyclate-based compounds, MKV, represented by Managing Director Dipl. Ing. Rainer Zies, contributed to DIN SPEC 91446 as co-author.
In addition, a large number of representatives of well-known companies and institutes, such as SKZ, TOMRA, KraussMaffei, STEINERT, IKK of Leibniz University Hannover, and others were involved.
